Rockfish(Striped Bass) have been biting in the Albemarle Sound and there have been some at the local OBX bridges over the past few days!  I am available to fish both locations from here on out.  Hopefully the Red Drum(Puppy Drum) will get back to biting around Oregon Inlet now that the weather has finally calmed down.  Hopefully we get another Speckled Trout bite or two before it gets too cold.  Tautog should be an option as well.  Rockfish(Striped Bass) season started October 1st.  Thank You to all of the following people for coming out fishing and putting up with me!   12/1/12-They did not bite as good today.  Lots of boats and very little tide.  We had seven bites.  One pulled off, one big fish broke us off on a piling, and we landed five.  Three were really healthy fish(PHOTO) (PHOTO) (PHOTO).  11/30/12-Finally, some weather and some guys that wanted to go for it(PHOTO) (PHOTO) (PHOTO)!  Great forecast every day this week coming up.  They ought to bite as there is nothing in the forecast to make them move!  11/16/12-We tried it today at the Chesepeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and around Lynnhaven Inlet.  Weatherman bricked the forecast bad.  At lunch time we said the heck with the wind and came in.  11/8/12-The good Red Drum bite(PHOTO) continued today for newlyweds Megan & Patrick Mott(PHOTO).  They kicked off their marriage with a great fishing trip.  Congratulations guys!  Apporximately 15 Red Drum up to 20 inches(3 keepers), Oregon Inlet.  11/6/12-Great fishing this afternoon for Bob Alexander(PHOTO), of Coumbia, South Carolina.  Things started slow but we finished real strong.  Lots of keeper sized fish today.  15 Red Drum up to 21 inches(multiple keepers), Oregon Inlet  11/2/12-Expectations were low today as we were less than a week from the Hurricane.  Things started slow, but we ended up with great fishing(PHOTO) (PHOTO) (PHOTO) (PHOTO)!  17 Red Drum up to 19 inches(one keeper), Oregon Inlet  10/18/12-Keith from T.W.'s Bait & Tackle and I left the dock at 4:30 this afternoon to see how good the bite was up to dark.  It was really good for Kieth(PHOTO) who caught most of the fish including two real nice keepers(PHOTO).  We caught all of our fish casting jigs.  14 Rockfish(Striped Bass) up to 22&1/2 inches(2 keepers), Currituck Sound.    10/17/12- Planned a couple hour scouting trip first thing this morning with a neighbor to see how many Rockfish were at one of the local bridges.  Two and a half hours later(flat tire & a motor that would not start), we left the dock at 9:30.  We ended up landing 5 fish casting jigs.  All fish were short.  A couple(PHOTO) of them came close(PHOTO).  I took Henry back again this evening for an hour or so and he got one keeper(PHOTO) out of two(PHOTO).  Wish we could have stayed till dark(they were starting to bite), but there was homework to do.  Based on what we saw today, I feel like there are some fish up there.  Given the right conditions(a little current and leaving early or fishing until dark), I think you could make a catch.  10/15/12 PM-Things started great as first line out we had a Drum bite.  After about a dozen bites and one keeper later they left us.  For the next couple of hours it was a struggle.  Just when it looked like we were going to finish with a sputter, the birds saved us.  They were everywhere and the Blues were boiling water underneath them.  Chaos ensued(PHOTO).  Double-rigs(PHOTO), two at a time(PHOTO), four guys, every cast(PHOTO).  It was a really nice class of fish as some of the doubles were almost too big to lift over the side.  Dinner for the rest of the week(PHOTO)!  Approximately 60 Bluefish up to 4 lbs., 8 Red Drum up to 18&1/2 inches, 6 Sheepshead, two throwback Flounder, one Speckled Trout, afternoon Oregon Inlet.  10/15/12 AM-We targeted the Reds this morning and could never really get them going.  We then moved onto the Gray Trout and could never get them going.  There was a body of bad water all over the inlet.  That is my excuse and I am sticking to it.  7 Red Drum up to 17&1/2 inches, 3 Gray Trout(Weakfish) up to 18 inches, a few throwback Sea Bass, one throwback Flounder, morning Oregon Inlet.  10/10/12-Lots of these(PHOTO) this morning(PHOTO), along with some throwback Speckled Trout, & a few small Sheepshead.  15 Red Drum up to 17 inches, 10 Speckled Trout up to 11&1/2 inches, 3 Sheepshead, Oregon Inlet.  10/7/12-Bluefish, Gray Trout(PHOTO), & Puppy Drum on light tackle this morning(PHOTO).  Appx. 25 Bluefish up to 3 lbs., 3 Gray Trout(Weakfish) up to 3 lbs., 3 Red Drum up to 17 inches, one throwback Flounder, Oregon Inlet.  10/6/12-The Amick's landed 9 of these.  This one almost made it(PHOTO) to the box.  9 Red Drum up to 17 inches, one throwback Flounder, Oregon Inlet.  10/5/12-Things started slow, but The McCain clan clobbered(PHOTO) them at the end of the trip.  65 Bluefish up to 3 lbs., 10 Gray Trout(Weakfish) up to 18 inches, 5 Red Drum up to 18&1/2 inches, Oregon Inlet.  Great seeing you guys again.  Thanks for the Red Hots, the cobbler, & the rod holders!  10/4/12- Barry(PHOTO) was a one man wrecking machine. 30 Speckled Trout up to 3 lbs., 25 Red Drum up to 19 inches(3 keeper sized fish), 3 Gray Trout(Weakfish) up to 16 inches, 2 Bluefish, one 30 lb. Cobia, one 2&1/2 lb. Aboard THE BEACH BUM I prefer to have you casting and jigging bucktails, Swim Baits, FIN-S', spoons, plugs, or live baiting over trolling.  If we can catch them casting or on live bait that is how we will do it unless you prefer trolling.  Bear in mind, some days we  have to suck it up and troll.  We land our fish on the lightest tackle that we can get away with.  Aboard THE BEACH BUM there is no mate.  YOU GET TO SET THE HOOK ON YOUR FISH instead of a mate setting the hook and handing you the rod.  Remember, you can also check the LATEST RESULTS section of the web page to see how we have done every trip we make aboard THE BEACH BUM.

VIRGINIA BEACH(RUDEE INLET) WIND FORECAST

Winter Fishing Trips 2012/2013(December-Early March)-I will be available for fishing out Oregon Inlet(O.B.X., N.C.) or Rudee Inlet(Virginia Beach).  One boat will be at each location.  The fish did not make it to Oregon Inlet last year(2011/2012) like they did the year before(2010/2011).  Your best bet is to be flexible.  My recommendation is to fish out of the location that is closest to the fish.  Weekdays are much less crowded than the weekends.  If you can make it during the week there is a lot less pressure on the fish which greatly increases your chances at catching them jigging.  Bring your rubber boots, rain gear, a Big cooler, and a strong mental fortitude for the bumpy days.  The decision to fish a scheduled winter-time trip will be made the day(morning) before the trip, or if absolutely necessary, the night before the day before the trip.   For those of you that need a room in Virginia Beach:  Days Inn(800)843-7096-$29.95(Sunday-Thursday), $34.95(Friday & Saturday) if you ASK FOR THE FISHERMAN'S SPECIAL!  Best Western(800)344-3342-$41.00 Seven days a week.  The rooms at both places have two double beds.  The Best Western has been recently remodeled.  Please do not call me three, four, five days, or a week before a scheduled trip and ask me to make an impossible decision.  I am not a weatherman, I am a fisherman.  Thank you!

DECEMBER(2012)-I am currently OPEN on 12/3, 12/4, 12/5, 12/6, 12/7, 12/8, 12/9, 12/10, 12/11, 12/12, 12/13, 12/14, 12/15, 12/16, 12/17, 12/18, 12/19, 12/20, 12/21, 12/22, 12/23, 12/27, 12/28, 12/29, 12/30, 12/31.  I will be scheduling 1/2 day, 3/4 day, or All day trips from December 1st-December 20th out of Oregon Inlet.  I will only be scheduling All day ocean trips from December 15th-December 31st out of Oregon Inlet/Rudee Inlet(Virginia Beach).  I will have a boat available for fishing the Atlantic Ocean waters near Virginia Beach & the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel out of Lynnhaven/Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach area throughout December.  We had great Rockfish(Striped Bass) fishing in the ocean waters near Virginia Beach the past two Decembers.  For you meathogs, there are a lot of fish landed in December in legal(keeper) waters.  We generally have good Rockfish(Striped Bass) fishing around the Bridge/Tunnel the days that we fish there in December.  Plenty of fish between 18 inches and 20 lbs. at the bridge.  You can keep them at the bridge at 18 inches through the end of the month.  We generally catch them casting swim baits and on eels at the bridge.  We catch the fish in ocean casting swim baits or trolling bucktails or plugs.  Either way, in December you have the option of fishing either location.  But, we cannot leave the bridge and enter the ocean with fish under 28 inches.  There is the possibility of big(over 40 lbs.) BIG RED DRUM(up to & over 50 lbs.) usually are biting by the first of April out of Hatteras and Ocracoke.  And, the bite should go on for the rest of the month into May.  This is mostly sight casting to schools of huge fish(we do catch some in the chum slick as well).  Puppy Drum on cut bait is an option on the days with poor visibility.  Lot's of Bluefish(PHOTO) around to cast to with the lighter tackle also.  One hour drive from Oregon Inlet.  The BEACH BUM boat will be available to fish out of Teach's Liar Marina.  The fish should be around through the end of May.  All day trips recommended(better odds).  I will try on a 3/4 or 1/2 day(real tall order).(PHOTO)

APRIL(2013)-I will be running the BEACH BUM out of Teach's Liar Marina in Hatteras Village for the month.  We will be targeting the Big Red Drum in 2013 out of Hatteras!  The Yeller Feller boat will be docked at The Oregon Inlet Fishing Center or will be on the trailer for the month.  It is available for trips in the O.B.X.(Currituck, Croatan, Roanoke, & Albemarle) Sound waters for Rockfish(Striped Bass).  You can keep 3 fish per person, per day, over 18 inches in the O.B.X. NOVEMBER(2013)-I am currently OPEN on 11/1, 11/2, 11/3, 11/4, 11/5, 11/6, 11/7, 11/8, 11/9, 11/10, 11/11, 11/12, 11/13, 11/14, 11/15, 11/16, 11/17, 11/18, 11/19/, 11/20, 11/21, 11/22, 11/23, 11/24, 11/25, 11/26, 11/27, 11/28, 11/29, & 11/30.  I will be scheduling 1/2 day, 3/4 day, or All day trips in November out of Oregon Inlet.  We we will be fishing for Rockfish(Striped Bass) at the Bonner(Oregon Inlet), Manns Harbor(New & Old Bridges), Manteo Bridge & the Currituck Bridge.  In 2010 the best fishing in November was around the bridges of the O.B.X. sounds.  We caught them casting jerk baits to the bridge poles.  One boat will be on the trailer and available to launch out of the most convenient(closest to the fish) boat ramp.  ***There are a load of small(up to 22 inches) school sized Rockfish(Striped Bass) in the Albemarle Sound near the Edenton Bridge.  I am available to run trips out of the public boat ramp in Columbia(30 miles west of Manteo/longer drive from Raleigh area) or out of the public ramp in Edenton(50 miles west of Manteo/shorter drive from Raleigh area).  Both ramps are right off of 64 West.  This is a short trip for those of you on the beach or those from the Raleigh area.  The Fall/Winter/Spring North Carolina Sound Rockfish(Striped Bass) Season opened on October the 1st and closes April the 30th.  You can keep 3 fish per person over 18 inches.  ***  Starting November the 1st, I will have a boat available for fishing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel out of Lynnhaven/Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach area as well.  We generally catch them casting swim/jerk baits and on eels.  Fish are between 18 inches and 15 lbs.  You can keep 2 fish per person at The Bay Bridge at 18 inches, but have to throw them back between 30 to 34 inches(I don't make the rules).  And, you can keep one per person over 34 inches(I don't make the rules).  I have peeler crabs so we can fish for Tautog up there too.  The Big(up to 50 lbs.)  For those of you that went on one of  the early years crabbing trips and enjoyed them, you have that option again!  A good friend of mine, Chad Hemelright is now running the same type of trips.  The crab pots are already in the water with bait in them.  You get to go out on a real crab boat, pull the pots like a crabber, and bring the freshest crabs home for dinner.  Chad will do the dirty work(pulling & re-baiting the pots) if you want him to, or you can do it.  Kids love these trips!  Come to think of it, I can't ever remember a crabbing trip that I ran with kids where I ever had to pull or re-bait more than one pot.  Once the first crab pot came over the side and was rebaited, the kids couldn't wait to pull and rebait the next one.  Chad's boat is docked in Kitty Hawk, which is a short drive for those of you staying on the northern beaches.  Chad can be reached at (252) 475-0090 or (252) 261-2551.
